Richard J. Flaster, the name partner, founder and president of the law firm Flaster/Greenberg PC, passed away suddenly on Monday, Aug. 9, at his home in Cherry Hill. He was 67.

Mr. Flaster was recognized nationally as an authority on tax law and still maintained an active practice at the time of his death. He provided legal counsel and advice to closely-held businesses on matters involving taxation, pensions, estate planning, corporations, partnerships and limited liability companies, negotiation and documentation of commercial contracts, and purchases and sales of businesses. He also provided counsel to public companies.

In 1972, he left the New York law firm Strook Strook & Lavan, and formed a two-lawyer tax practice with Emmanuel (“Manny”) Liebman. In 1976, shareholder Steve Greenberg, a graduate of Yale Law School, joined the firm. The name of the firm was subsequently changed to Flaster/Greenberg PC.

“Throughout Rick’s 38-plus years with the firm, he was a true visionary,” said Flaster/Greenberg managing shareholder Peter R. Spirgel. “He was incredibly creative and truly enjoyed helping his clients. Most importantly, he was a mentor to me and many of us at the firm. We were fortunate to have him as our partner and friend. He will be truly missed.”

A frequent lecturer and prolific writer, Mr. Flaster wrote and edited numerous articles on tax-related subjects for publications in various professional journals. He had authored two books on tax law and contributed to two other books. His first novel, Authority of Thieves, was published in 2002. Mr. Flaster was profiled in the Wall Street Journal in July 2003 in a column entitled “Workspaces,” for the extensive collection of hippos on display in his office. At the time of the article, his collection numbered about 1400 hippos of all shapes and sizes.

Mr. Flaster is listed in the 2005-2010 editions of The Best Lawyers in America for Tax Law, and was also included in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who in American Law. He was voted one of the best tax lawyers in the region for 2005-2010 in New York Magazine, and by NJ Magazine as one of the top attorneys in South Jersey for 2004-2010. He was voted a New Jersey “Super Lawyer” in Tax Law for 2005-2010.

Mr. Flaster attended the University of Pennsylvania where he received a B.S. in Economics in 1963. At Penn, he was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma (the National Business Students Honor Society), Beta Alpha Psi (the National Accounting Students Honor Society) and Pi Gamma Mu (the national Social Science Students Honor Society). He earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1966.

Mr. Flaster is survived by his wife of 41 years, Esther, who is the theatrical director of the Ritz Theatre in Oaklyn, NJ; son Eben, a lawyer at Dechert; daughter Kiva Flaster Barr, also an attorney; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 12 at 11:30 a.m. at Platt Memorial Chapels in Voorhees.

The winter season was one of the most difficult the state has experienced in more than a decade. Three major snowstorms since December and several vicious rainstorms leading into the spring have caused more than their fair share of damage and debris, some of which is still in front yards and side streets of the township. To help combat the remaining downed trees and yard debris, township representatives have designed and instituted a special program to help Cherry Hill residents remove the remains still present in Cherry Hill.

Mayor Bernie Platt said he would be instituting a special debris clearing program to assist residents in Cherry Hill who may not be able to clear the debris from their yards or property.

The township has instituted several programs throughout the season to help combat the effects of the severe weather. Residents can also call a specialized hotline to report potholes stemming from the township roadways taking a beating this season.

A township ordinance states that weekly yard waste pick up – from shrubs, large branches, even small trees – must be cut and bundled into manageable bags or open bins weighing no more than 60 pounds for the public works department to collect. Chief of Staff Dan Keashen said some residents don’t have the tools or the physical presence to collect the abnormal amount of yard waste generated by these past storms, so a specialized program will be in effect for another two weeks throughout the township.

The program will allow residents to schedule large, unbundled yard-waste pickups through the Department of Public Works. Provided that the branches, limbs and similar pieces of natural debris are of a reasonable weight and brought curbside, a DPW crew will chip the wood on-site and take it away from the property.

“At this point and time from the unprecedented amount of snow and rain the region and the Township have experienced, residents need help clearing away the massive amounts of debris that were created by damaged trees,” Platt said. “Many of the seniors in town don’t have the resources to clear this material from their yards, so I will be diverting one of our DPW crews from their regular job duties to assist residents.”

Households interested in utilizing this temporary curbside wood-chipping program can schedule a pickup by calling the DPW at 856-424-4422 and making an appointment. As equipment is limited, these requests are expected to take several days to process.

Residents can also call the same number to report a pothole.

A Cherry Hill East High School senior is hoping to throw the fashion event of the year and raise awareness about an extremely rare disorder.

Samantha Kofsky – a senior student with an eye for fashion – is hosting a fund-raising fashion show on Friday, April 16 at 7 p.m. in the Cherry Hill East auditorium. Tickets are $5 each and all of the money raised from the event will be donated to an organization to help find a cure for Familial Dysautonomia, a rare genetic neurological condition that affects some of the basic instincts and reflexes that humans do without thinking.

Kofsky’s younger brother was diagnosed with the disorder at a young age and is one of about 300 people in the country to have the affliction, she said.

“My brother is in a pretty good place right now, but some people with the disorder can’t even get up. They don’t eat orally; they eat through a feeding tube. Their nervous systems are off, they can’t feel pain. Once he broke his arm and he didn’t even feel it. He can’t taste a lot of things, his taste buds are off,” she said.

Her love of fashion led Kofsky to begin creating the fund raiser last year. The idea came to her during her fashion class at East, she said, when she and a number of other girls in the course were talking about how fun it would be to host their own fashion show.

It was in this class that the seeds of the fund raiser were planted and work began, she said.

“I’ve always loved fashion. I was in an art class and participating in a fashion unit and a bunch of girls were talking about how cool it would be to host a fashion show. It would be a lot of work, but it got the ball rolling,” Kofsky said. “We’re hoping people come because it’s a good cause. Someone in our community has this rare disorder, and we’d like to raise awareness. People will be able to donate and we’re looking to support kids with this disorder. “

Opening the fund raiser will be a period with food and drink donated by local a Wegmans, Shoprite, Chipotle, and Classic Cakes, she said. Attendants will be able to mingle before the show and visit a table with information on the disorder and listen to music from 96.5 FM, which will also be present at the fundraiser.

From 7:30 p.m. on the show will begin and over 40 models – both men and women students from East – will be showcasing designs from local merchants that are participating in the show, Kofsky said. All of the music and clothing during the event will be safari themed, she said.

During the show other students will be performing dance routines and performing music, Kofsky said. Jazz Unlimited, a student singing group from East, will also be performing during the fashion show.

“We’ll have entertainment during the show as well. Casual Harmony, the boys group at East, will also perform,” she said. “We’ll have some girls who formed their own group and my hip hop teacher got eight professional guy dancers to perform. We’ll have lots of break dancing.”

All tickets will be bought at the door. For more information on the event, please visit the fund raiser’s Facebook page by searching “Cougars on the Cat Walk.”

The Cherry Hill Sun
It’s not often a group can raise awareness about two diseases during one charity walk, but a local family hopes to bring a lesser known disease to the forefront while raising money for Type-1 Diabetes research.
Donna Bell and her daughter Evey, 6, have registered a team of 200 to 300 participants for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation “Walk to Cure Diabetes,” event at Cooper River on Oct. 18. This will be the team’s third year of participation, Bell said.
Evey, Bell said, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes – or Juvenile Diabetes – when she was just 3 years old. The JDRF expects to raise about $150 million nationally with this year’s walk, all of which will go to diabetes research and awareness.
For the past two years the team has either been named after Evey or her last name, Bell said, but this year the group is doing something different. For the walk this year, the team will be named “Team Celiac,” to help raise awareness about Celiac Disease, which affects 20 percent of people who have been diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes.
Both Bell and Evey have been diagnosed with Celiac Disease.
“We decided to raise awareness for Celiac while completing this walk and raising money for the JDRF,” Bell said. “I created a support group for families who have children with Type-1 and Celiac, and they’ve stood by me, and they’ll have all their kids walking with us at the event. If we can raise awareness about Celiac for the general public, that would be huge.”
Bell said the information booth will also be manned by people who have been diagnosed with Celiac Disease to answer specific questions.
Donations can be made by going to the JDRF “Walk for a Cure” Web site at Walk.JDRF.org. Enter “Team Celiac” into the team name box and donations can automatically be made.
