By ROBERT LINNEHAN | The Cherry Hill Sun
Cherry Hill is expanding its living options for one of the fastest-growing demographics across the country. The township and the Diocese of Camden County have announced an expansion of the senior citizen apartment complex at St. Mary’s Catholic Home.
The new project will include 75 single units and one two-bedroom unit for the on-site manager, Curtis Johnson, executive director for the Housing Services Corporation of the Diocese of Camden County, said last week. The $15 million project would largely be funded by $11.2 million the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development approved in early 2009, Johnson said.
The complex would serve one of the fastest-growing sectors of the population, as Cherry Hill currently has at least a two-year waiting list for low-income and senior housing complexes in the region, Johnson said.
“The township has been extremely supportive of the project; they understand the graying of America and they see the population trends moving in that direction,” he said. “When you see the wait lists for all of the other housing projects, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out what needs to be done.”
